Athienou, the URBACT Good Practice City of Volunteerism, is a very beautiful flatland place. Is mainly an agriculture town in Cyprus, with many attractions and a lot of volunteering actions and initiatives.
It’s one of the oldest municipalities in Cyprus, founded in 1926 and it has a long history and an exceptional culture. In recent years, it has shown a rapid growth. It has a lot of experience in implementing EU projects, with many youths participating in its actions.

The Municipality gives special attention to tourism, with emphasis on experiential, religious and cultural tourism. Athienou has interesting infrastructures that support the development of tourism: well-preserved traditional buildings, rural accommodation, etc. You can also watch halloumi cheese being made in the traditional way in a restored old creamery. All this, together with the Kallinikeio museum, the restored flour mill, the beautiful churches and other ancient sites, attracts a large number of foreign and local visitors.
The economy of the area is very developed, with farming being the main occupation of the inhabitants. Large industries produce a big share of the Cyprus production of dairy products, while smaller industries and individuals produce the famous local traditional products. 8 items of the Municipality, 5 by its own and 3 with other carriers, have been inserted in the National Catalogue of UNESCO.
The Municipality promotes the green economy and development. There are two large biomass power plants in the area and many photovoltaic parks, while there is a domestic sewage system, with a biological treatment plant producing treated water for agricultural use.
